Cigarette smoke contains more than 4,000 chemical compounds, including cyanide, formaldehyde, and ammonia. Constantly exposing the human body to these toxins, plus the drug nicotine, has serious health consequences.

Smokers are much more likely to develop gangrene of the leg, which is caused by a gradual closure of the of the large blood vessels carrying blood to the legs. In its advanced stages, amputation can be the end result.

Holidaymakers Should be More Prepared

The past year has seen an upward swing in independent travellers, many of whom are completely unprepared for possible tight spots they may encounter.
Research suggests a definite trend in people becoming more independent, using websites to plan their own holidays, flights and accommodation instead of using travel agencies.

Every year, there are about 90 000 serious cases of British tourists getting into trouble and requiring the help of the Consulate. The most common problem British Nationals face abroad is a lack of preparedness, especially when it comes to travel insurance.
Recent studies even found that 35 per cent of over-55s didn’t acquire travel insurance on their last holiday, even though a quarter of them took part in dangerous activities like sky-diving, bungee jumping, ab sailing and even swimming with sharks.
That’s astounding when you consider that if you get into trouble overseas and you don’t have travel insurance, it can cost many thousands of pounds for an air ambulance, medication, hospital stays and getting people back to the UK. That could cost up to £30 000 and then you’re talking about a second mortgage.”

Important measures for independent travellers

Besides comprehensive travel insurance, you should check up on travel advice and danger zones in advance. I would advise people to check out the latest situation in any country they’re going to. And as the world situation changes so frequently these days, the most important thing is to find out the very latest information.
Other essential considerations are to find out about laws and customs, get a good travel guide and check out medical requirements such as vaccinations a good 6 weeks before you travel.

Remember to make sure your passport’s valid and has at least six months to run, take a photocopy and leave it with someone you trust and make sure you fill in your next of kin. Keep the details of the nearest British Consulate with you, because it could be really useful in times of trouble. Have You Been Skiing?

If you have never done it, you must try it at least once. But be warned, it can be extremely addictive.

If you say that you can't do it or that you are too old, let me tell you that you will have as much (or more) fun learning than the seasoned experts have speeding past you.

I visited Pamporovo on my third ski-ing holiday. I had previously been to Italy and one of the top resorts in France. I was pleasantly surprised to find that the teaching methods in Bulgaria were much better than the methods I had previously encountered. Also, and this is a very big plus, on the third day of the holiday other members in the group who had not previously been ski-ing found themselves ski-ing down from the very top of the mountain. Something I could only dream about on my previous holidays. Generally, the holiday was excellent, the hotels were very good, I stayed in the Perelik Hotel which is joined to the Mourgavetz Hotel by underground walkway, the hotels boast seven bars, cafe, swimming pool (with green water) and plenty of shops. Entertainment is put on nightly and there is a bowling alley. The food is not the best, but you help yourself from a fairly large selection of choices so you can usually find something that you like.
The snow record in Bulgaria is not as good as some and because of this the season tends to be shorter than most, there is not really enough challenge on the slopes for anyone better than 'intermediate', although there are one or two challenging runs.
All this is reflected in the price, which is relatively cheap.
Your food is usually in with the package and you will pay similar prices to home for your drinks.
The ski instructors are top class and very friendly.
I would definitely recommend this holiday for beginners of any age group.

Top Ten Tips To Quit Smoking

Read these 10 Top Tips for advice on giving up.

1. Keep a diary
Before you stop, keep a diary over a couple of days Make a note of every cigarette you smoke, when, what you were doing, who you were with, how you were feeling, how much you enjoyed it, how much you needed it and how it made you feel. Looking at your diary will help you see potential danger points when it will be hardest not to smoke. Plan how you will cope with these.

2. Set a quit date
This helps you prepare mentally to stop. Some people make a New Year’s Day resolution; others pick their birthday, but it can be any time. You can use your 'smoking diary' to work out when would be a good time for you to quit. You may find it easier to quit smoking when you're on holiday and away from your normal routine. Alternatively, you might find it easier to start afresh when you come back. Be realistic about what will test your willpower most. There is evidence that female smokers are more likely to succeed if they stop just after their period rather than just before.

3. Change your routine
Perhaps you could avoid shops where you usually buy cigarettes or walk instead of catching the bus if you normally have a smoke at the bus stop. If you always have a cigarette in the morning with a coffee, switch to fruit juice instead. When giving up smoking, it is worth giving alcohol a miss for a few days until your resolve is strong enough to resist the association of drinking with smoking. Brush your teeth at the end of a meal or drink something (like milk) that doesn't normally ‘go’ with smoking.

4. Start afresh
Before your quit date, get your teeth cleaned and start using whitening toothpaste and mouthwash. Keeping your breath fresh and your teeth white can be an incentive not to smoke and are a few of the benefits of giving up smoking. Some people find carrying a breath freshener spray helpful. Why not go the whole hog and clean your car and house to get rid of the smell of cigarette smoke? If you've spent time and money repainting walls to cover nicotine stains, shampooing carpets and dry cleaning upholstery, you'll want to keep everything that way.

5. Remember that the physical cravings will pass
The urge to smoke lasts for a couple of minutes and you might find it helps to take deep breaths until the feeling starts to subside. Cravings get weaker after three to four days. Think back to the first day you quit – you don't want to have to go through it again.

6. Find a substitute
Try to find a healthy alternative like sugar-free chewing gum. Chew on a toothpick if you miss having something in your mouth. Fiddle with a pen or paper clip to keep your hands busy.
One piece of advice on giving up smoking that some people swear by is to take a 'drag' on a piece of rolled up paper so they get a 'hit' of fresh air. Glucose tablets can give you a boost of energy that replaces the rush you used to get from nicotine.

7. Think positive
It’s a good idea to write a list of the reasons why you want to stop and put it somewhere you can easily see it. Keep a scrapbook of newspaper and magazine cuttings about the risks of smoking to inspire you. For instance think of the money you will save and what you can do with it. Think of how much better you will feel and how much healthier you will be.

8. Do something else
Try and find a hobby or other activity that makes smoking difficult, such as knitting or swimming, or which takes place somewhere you can't smoke, like your local library. You’ll find there are other benefits from quitting smoking and the stimulation and enjoyment of doing something new and interesting will help keep your mind off quitting.

9. Watch the money add up
A big benefit of quitting smoking is that you’ll be better off in the pocket. Cross off each day on a calendar and write down how much you've saved by not smoking. Or you could physically put the money aside.
Make a list of things you would like to buy for yourself or others and work out how many packets of cigarettes each item ‘costs’.

10. Reward yourself
Plan a celebration each month on the anniversary of your quit date. Buy some of the things on your list or treat yourself to a special meal.

Many people begin to quit smoking by setting a date on which to stop. Tell your friends, family and co-workers that you are giving up and want their support. Ask them not to smoke around you or leave cigarettes lying around. It is also helpful to change your environment by getting rid of all cigarettes and ashtrays in your home, car and place of work.
If you have tried to stop smoking before, review your past attempts to quit. Think about what worked and what didn't. As far as possible, don't allow people around you to smoke, for example in your car or your home.
Most relapses occur within the first three months after quitting. Don't be discouraged if you start smoking again. Most people try several times before they finally succeed in breaking the habit. Here are some difficult situations to watch for:

Alcohol: Drinking alcohol lowers your chances of success, particularly if you have been accustomed to smoking while you drink.

Other smokers: Being around other smokers can make you want to start again. Once you have stopped, make up your mind not to smoke again - not even a puff.

Weight gain: Smoking suppresses appetite, so many former smokers put on weight when they quit. Eat a healthy diet and stay active. Don't let a small amount of weight gain distract you from your main goal - which is to give up smoking.

Bad mood or depression: There are plenty of ways to improve your mood other than smoking.

Studies have shown that you have a better chance of successfully quitting smoking if you have help. Get individual, group, or telephone counselling to help you quit. The more support you have, the better your chances of succeeding. Programs are given at local doctors' surgeries and health centres.

Finally - I Quit Smoking

Finally. At the beginning of this year, at the age of 51, having smoked 40 a day for as long as I remember I finally quit smoking. Rhodes, Greece


When you have quit smoking and saved enough money for your first trip I would definitely recommend Rhodes. I have been several times and always enjoy my time there. It is only a relatively small island but caters for all kinds of holidays, whichever you prefer.
The beauty of Rhodes is that there is something for everyone, from watersports in some of the clearest water I have seen , to walking or hiking in outstanding countryside, to sunbathing in almost guaranteed beautiful weather, to just doing what comes naturally in the bars and nightclubs on the island.
I have stood on a mountain and been able to see most of Rhodes, I have stood on the southern tip of the island and watched the sun go down creating, what can only be described as breath-taking views, I have crawled through a tunnel to see some of the rarer species in the Butterfly gardens, I have stood on a cliff and watched countless million of Tunafish dancing in the late afternoon sun. All this and a lot more.

Rhodes Town is a typically bustling Mediterranean capital surrounding the ‘Old Town’ which is an amazing mixture of Ancient buildings and earthworks, Street market and Carnival. The ‘Old Town’ stands adjacent to the harbour which usually has some of the largest and most expensive yachts in the Med ‘tied up’ there. The food, all over Rhodes, is excellent and reasonably priced. From the Restaurant to the Taverna on the beach or in the centre of a small village that you’ve just found by accident.
Starting down the east coast, one of the first major resorts you come to will be Faliraki, this should be avoided unless you are ’Young, Free and Single’ or like to pretend you are for a night, or two. Be aware this place doesn’t open ’til 2 in the afternoon, but then on the other hand it doesn’t close until 8 in the morning. If you like a quiet beach this could be the place because just about everyone on it before 2 p.m. is fast asleep. After 2 o'clock you had better make way for Bungee Jumping and the like.
Further down the coast there are plenty of quieter resorts until you reach ’Ooooh ! Point’ this is the point on the road where you first catch sight of Lindos, called ‘Ooooh ! Point’ because you can not help this exclamation at the wonderful sight in front of you. Lindos is pretty much unique, built around a natural bay, surmounted by the Acropolis , all the houses etc. either stone or painted white, fronted by two beaches with another bay (St. Paul’s) and beach, behind. The village is pedestrianised with the only mode of transport the ’Lindos Taxi’ (Donkey) , there are many bars and roofgarden restaurants and plenty of shops. All in all a very special place. However if you wished to stay here it will involve a lot of walking up and down hills, some quite steep.
Further south still you have a few other villages including Pefkos which tend to be quiet but are within easy taxi (or even walking) distance of Lindos if you fancy a night out.
The taxi service is good and easily accessible and also the bus service which runs north to south of the island.
The weather on Rhodes is very hot during July and August, especially Lindos and many people travel in September because of this.

From the moment they open the doors of the aircraft and you get your very first scent of the island , you could very well be hooked....................I was !!!
